Could this be the right path…? Two large log houses are hidden behind the canopy surrounding a small path. Vegetables are picked locally, the brown rice is of the healthy kind, and cakes are mostly all handmade. Kirikiri, a curry place on Oshima island is a reservation only restaurant. Please enjoy their healthy curry and pizza, good for both mind and body, whilst listening to the beautiful sound of chirping birds.
How to get there: Pass through a line of trees before arriving at the restaurant
Only a 5 minute drive or 20 minutes on foot from Motomachi Port or a 15 minute drive from Okata Port. Once you spot the sign for Curry House Kirikiri (吉里吉里) you take a turn leading you onto a small path. The road gets increasingly narrow, and you end up facing a dense forest. "Is this really the right way?" You might ask yourself, but you just need to persevere and carry on.
If you go by car, please drive carefully. The road leading to Kirikiri is pretty narrow and you might feel a little apprehensive of colliding with a tree but then....out of nowhere you arrive at a clearing.
There are two log houses. The taller one on the right is Kirikiri. The sign, mailbox, everything is handmade. Even the door is decorated with a cute little house. The entrance to Kirikiri is on the second floor. Facing backwards as you climb the stairs, you can see Oshima island in all its glory filled with green, and beyond that, the ocean.
The interior is very spacious, creating a sense of openness. Perhaps because all the tables and chairs are made out of wood, automatically you will feel relaxed.
Specialities of Kirikiri: Curry and pizza made from home-grown vegetables and other delicious ingredients
Food has to pre-ordered at the time of booking, so on the day itself you only order drinks.
The dishes are vegetable-rich including the vegan meals - such as a chickpea curry set, the classic chicken curry set, and the Ashitaba pizza, topped with the island’s famous Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) herbs and camellia oil, a dish unique to the island. Choose between rice or, for an additional 150 yen, a delicious naan bread to have with your curry. Other items on the menu include chicken, chickpea and prawn mixed curry, and lava oven baked pizza.
The curry set comes with a salad, and Kirikiri makes sure to use fresh ingredients for all their dishes. They use local, seasonal, and organic ingredients. The curry is rather mild, so it’s perfect for those who don't particularly like spicy food. There’s just the right amount of chilli for it to be wholesome. The pizza crust, made with home made natural yeast, is very soft with an addictive, chewy texture. The addition of fresh Ashitaba makes it taste less fatty, making it easy to finish the whole meal. For dessert, there are raw brownies, highly recommended for vegetarians, and many other temptations. Most of the desserts are home-made, and yet the owner manages everything by herself. Due to high demand it became necessary to change to a reservation only restaurant, that's how popular this place is.
Surrounded by all the greenery and listening to bird songs, you can satisfy your appetite with food that is fully wholesome. We invite you to experience such bliss at Kirikiri.
