Imagine swimming alongside wild dolphins in crystal-clear waters, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. On Mikurashima, also known as Mikurajima, this dream becomes a reality. This enchanting island is home to playful wild dolphins, thriving in one of Japan's most pristine virgin forests and nourished by abundant spring water.
The Mikurashima Marugoto Tour offers an unforgettable adventure where you can watch and swim with incredible dolphins in their natural habitat. But that's not all – you'll also explore the island's hidden charms, from its lush greenery to its serene beaches. The tour package includes comfortable accommodations and three delicious meals daily, with options for special dietary needs, including vegetarian and other specific diets. Whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation, or a unique encounter with nature, Mikurashima is the perfect destination for an extraordinary experience.
All-inclusive tours on Mikurashima Island!
Mikurashima is located 200 km south of Tokyo. The island is famous for its untouched forests and the wild dolphins that swim around its shores. Despite its popularity, Mikurashima is a small island with steep cliffs, limited accommodations, and few activity providers, making it difficult to book everything individually. The Mikurashima Marugoto Tour packages solve this by including accommodation, three meals a day, a dolphin tour, and a guided walk to explore the island's attractions. All you need to book separately is transportation to the island and a mountain tour if desired.
During the dolphin swim tour, the experienced captain spots a dolphin, and everyone jumps into the ocean! A tour instructor will guide you toward the dolphins and capture great videos and photos. These videos and photos are shown at night at the accommodation and can be purchased.
Experienced instructors lead dolphin swim tours
The staff of Mikurashima Marugoto Tour are all highly skilled. The tour organizer, Tamami, is a dolphin instructor and former diving instructor who has been organizing this tour since 2004. Taguchi-san, a diving instructor with over 40 years of experience, will photograph you swimming with the dolphins. Along with them, other knowledgeable instructors will showcase the island's and sea's unique charm and allure.
Driving through an island surrounded by dense forest
After the Dolphin Swim Tour, you'll be taken for a drive around the island as part of the tour. During the drive, you’ll experience the natural beauty and traditions of Mikurashima, including its unique customs, seasonal flowers, and waterfalls. For example, Mikurashima is blessed with an abundance of spring water that flows constantly into the sea, creating ever-flowing waterfalls. There's also a tradition of visiting a small shrine before entering the mountains, where you leave a sprig of grass as a sign of respect. When you descend, the grass is collected from the shrine. Your guide will share these and other island traditions with you.
The tour will reveal how this island is beloved by birds, dolphins, fish, and many other creatures, thanks to its unique environment and the efforts of the islanders to protect it.
Stay at the Comfortable JIROUMARU Inn, Reopened in 2020
The Jiro Maru guest house reopened in the spring of 2020. This cozy inn, with a capacity for 10 guests and three bedrooms, is designed to encourage tour participants to get to know each other in the shared living room. The inn is always kept clean and comfortable. All bedrooms feature traditional Japanese futons, allowing you to enjoy a unique sleeping experience.
For the dolphin tour, you can change into your swimsuits here and look forward to soaking in a warm bath as soon as you return from the ocean. The staff are very accommodating and ready to meet all your needs.
Customized Meals to Meet Your Dietary Needs
Finding accommodations or restaurants that cater to vegetarian or special diets on Mikurashima can be challenging, as such options are rare throughout Japan. However, the Mikurashima Marugoto Tour is dedicated to ensuring every guest's dietary needs are met.
Before your arrival, the tour organizers will ask about any dietary restrictions or specific ingredients you need to avoid, ensuring your meals are both delicious and suitable for you.
Understanding the diverse dietary requirements stemming from various religions and personal preferences, the team strives to accommodate all requests. To help them provide the best experience, please inform them of your dietary needs either when you arrive at the inn or through the reservation email.
The Last Step: Booking Your Ferry Ticket to the Island
After booking the Mikurashima Marugoto Tour, your accommodation, meals, and dolphin swimming tour will be secured. The next step is to arrange transportation to Mikurashima. There are two main options: ferry or helicopter. If you're traveling directly from Tokyo, you will need to book a seat on a large ferry. Alternatively, you can take a helicopter from Miyakejima or Hachijojima. Detailed information on how to get to Mikurashima is available on this page.

The Mikurashima Marugoto Tour also offers a hiking tour. Mikurashima, often referred to as "Little Yakushima," boasts a deep, untouched forest with nearly 100% humidity. This forest is home to many giant trees, as well as numerous rare plants and birds. The Mikurashima Marugoto Tour includes guided hiking tours, with several recommended options available.
How to Reserve Your Mikurashima Marugoto Tour
Please follow these steps to reserve your Mikurashima Marugoto Tour:
- Send an email to Mikurashima Marugoto Tour to check availability.
- Review the safety confirmation letter sent by Mikurashima Marugoto Tour, as certain health conditions may prevent you from participating in the dolphin swim.
- Once your reservation for the Mikurashima Marugoto Tour is confirmed, book your transportation.
- Contact Mikurashima Marugoto Tour by email as soon as your tickets are available.
If You Want to Reserve Only the Guest House
It is not possible to book just the lodging without the dolphin swim activity from March to November. From December to February, if you are interested in booking accommodation only—although it is generally unavailable—please let us know, and we may be able to make arrangements. During this period, we recommend traveling by helicopter, as the boat landing rate on the island is often low, and you may not be able to reach the island.
