Camellia Festival-from at end of January to March
Every year from January to March, a camellia festival is held on Oshima. This is a historic festival held since 1956.
During this time, you will come across traditional performances such as Oshima folk singing as well as photography exhibitions. You can even walk through the ‘camellia tunnel’ made using camellias.

Oshima is known for its Camellias. There are approximately 3 million camellia trees around the island, and the camellia oil drawn from the seeds are treasured as an important ingredient in cooking, not to mention cosmetics and soaps.

This is how pressure is applied to the seeds of the camellias to squeeze the oil out.

Summer Festival- 11th and 12th of August

In the summer, each district holds its own summer festival. You will find numerous food stalls selling gourmet food, while a stage is set up for music performances.
Some of the festivals even have fireworks, lending to their popularity of on the island.
There are other unique festivals that take place on Oshima.
For example, at the port of Okada, also know as ‘Little Napoli’, a Naples festival is held every fall, where you will find Naples inspired dishes available only on this day.
