This island is the southern most of the Tokyo Islands and enjoys a warm breeze blowing through the island from all directions. As such, the climate here is very mild, creating a tropical environment different to that of the other islands.
So much so that you will find tropical trees and plants growing throughout the island, and in the mountains there is a jungle where palm trees grow, while the ocean is a haven of tropical fish and corals. As the temperature is generally warmer than Tokyo year round, it is perfect for various activities.
Of the various activities, diving and snorkeling are especially recommended. Kuroshio (black tide) travels from the far south to reach the sea at Hachijojima. As such, there are many types of tropical fish and corals living in the sea there. The water is also very clear, and thus provides the perfect setting for swimming underwater with all the marine life.
The mountain activities are highly recommended too. Hachijojima has two mountains called Mt. Hachijofuji and Mt. Mihara. At Mt. Hachijofuji, try the hike where you walk the crater, and at Mt. Mihara, try exploring the dynamic jungle and waterfalls.
The onsen that come out of these mountains are appealing too. There are many onsen around the Tokyo Islands, but it is only at Hachijojima that you would find natural onsen in the middle of a jungle. If the jungle is not to your taste, there are also onsen built on platform that sit just above the sea, and also traditional public onsen to enjoy.
